Hi all, I'm hoping one of you can help.

As I was playing last night, I kept having problems with my monitor--or so it seemed. Eventually I realized that my graphics card was straight-up overheating. It's a GeForce MX 4000, PCI, 64 mb. I bought it last May.

I've tried moving the card to a different slot, leaving the case open, etc, but the card still gets really hot, and when I plug the monitor into it it's not even recognized. When I check 'Device Manager' it's not seeing the card at all. I'm trying to search for my driver disc but I think this is a lost cause.

So, my question is this:
a) does anyone have any ideas to get this card working agin?
b) if the card is in fact *through*, does anyone have an old card that they'd be willing to sell me? Or, does anyone have any circuit for picking up a card cheaply?

Thanks in advance for any help...

Pinky
have you tried kicking it?
Lisi
heh. repeatedly.
Pinky
let's see now, ker-plow, ker-boom, ker-blam, ah here we go, ker-flooey.

Hmmm, yes... I see...

Your card is crap. MX suck. A 64 mb card shouldn't be overheating unless you're trying to OC it but that's just silly.

I'll trade you one of my old FX cards for a puppy

Otherwise the way I usually deal with overheating vid cards is to take off the fan, put some of that heat absorbing gel on the chip, then reattach the fan.
Lisi
well, but see, my computer is also teh suck.

i mean, for god's sake, i have a celeron 800 mhz proc. so no, nothing fancy here. i just want to be able to run it.

<whimper>
Pinky
yeesh no wonder. the newer models don't go ker-flooey anymore, but celerons were notorious for it.

If the monitor isn't detecting your card at all now, it's probably fried. Make sure the fan (if it has one) isn't dead. Either way... I'm suprised that card can even run WoW. It might be time to replace :)

Here is where I shop for all of my computer hardware. They generally have the best prices on the web and the service is the best I have ever seen.

and here is their video card section

One question. Do you have an AGP slot on your motherboard?

EXACT same thing I had, exact same card (geforce4 PCI 64mb, got it last may). card go boom. i still havent had the chance to get another yet.
Lisi
no, my computer is a lemon. no agp slot.

oabe gave some advice and i think the card is simply dead.

will a radeon 256 mb, 9250 (or so) run with an 800 mhz celeron proc?
Pinky
GeForce MX line go ker-flooey lots

FX are better. Try for a 5200 or a 5500. You can usually get them for $100 or less. 128 mb. Make sure you have a big enough power supply for them.

I doubt your power supply has the 300-350 watts needed to power a 256 card though.
