Full Version: Second MC run (and tips for tanks)

We wiped 3x more on the regular mobs than we did on our first run, and it was going rather shitty. After being raidlocked fucked out of 5 people, we decided to have a go despite being short one full group of people.

Anyways, this post is more about proving bums like Thor (Willow) wrong... why defense gear owns and he ain't got no idea what he's talking about ever.

Look in the bottom right corner. As you can see, when mobs are hitting you for that much damage (I already have 8k+ armor) HP doesn't really matter. Defense gear adds to your chance to dodge and parry which completely nullifies the melee damage received, making it a far superior choice than stamina or armor (additionally, get +agility enchanted on your items for +dodge %, not stamina). Strength is also a useless attribute as the damage blocked by a shield is almost unnoticeable.

Of course, HP and armor does indeed help. It buys healers more time to breathe for heals (look at top left corner; additionally I don't have any +stamina enchants or stamina gear on or it would be an additional 600+ hp... and with last stand a warrior could easily raise his health to 12000+).

My life ran into the 300 range quite a few times during Lucifron and it's damn stressful being a tank. Gives me a little heart attack everytime I go under 2000 hp. Of course, a few well placed laying of hands saved the day. The raid owned Lucifron on our first try with very few casualties : )

Unfortunately the epic necklace that dropped was shittier than a lot of blue items and most people didn't think it was even worth rolling for.

Tanking magmadar (notice the damage he does; he also attacks extremely quickly):

The raid starts to fall apart in the first few moments of the encounter, with some of the healers dropping almost right away. Kerv uses the only soulstone bringing herself back to life to keep me alive, but dies again thus the raid is a complete wipe. We did manage to bring Magmadar down to 50% (on our first try, with a bad start, underhanded 5 people, and in dire need of more than one druid). Planned tomorrow is a death to Magmadar.

I've always said +defense sucks compared to what it used to do.

...but yer always too worried about what piece of loot dropped to hear me.

was always curious.. dodge and parry

what exactly is the difference? how does one benefit over the other?
walrus
dodge/parry are just two different ways to completely avoid the mob's damage. while im guessing nam can answer this better, traditionally it works in a chain something like this:

#1 mob attacks
#2 dodge check.. if it fails, onto parry
#3 parry check.. if it fails, onto block
#4 block check.. if it fails, onto beating your ass
#5 mob damages you

in this way, on steps 2 and 3 if you parry/dodge the attack, thats the end of that individual attack. no damage is dealt to you as you completely avoided it. this is also traditionally the same for blocking, however some damage is still taken in this game when making atleast some blocks (?) but it is reduced.

as far as benefits of parry vs dodge or vice versa - they both do the same thing as far as negating the damage dealt. so i think the benefits would be determined by 2 things:

1. skills/abilities which can be used after you successfully dodge/parry
2. innate bonuses to dodge/parry

but what do i know... im a mage.

You should've been a warrior, walrus.

Most plate wearers don't know that!

Nice post Namishin. I'll keep those things in mind when i'm working on my warrior.

The only thing that I can think of is related to Warriors. The warrior skill "Overpower" can only be used after an enemy dodges.

In PvP, if you dodge a warrior's attack, you are at risk of being hit even harder (or not at all if they miss).

In PvE, when a mob attacks you, I don't think there would be a difference. Unless they know to use special abilities in response to either a dodge or a parry. Has anyone ever had a warrior mob use Overpower on you after dodging?

My warrior alt is only lvl 30, so I don't know if there are any abilities that are related to countering parries.
