After playing again a while ago I decided I really didn't like their system anymore.

Nah, it was the required downtime. Go kill things for 5 minutes, sit for 30. It makes the entire leveling process take way too long. Now granted, it's mainly there for the people and interaction, but sometimes there's no one to hang out with so you're just doing something else while you're leveling.

Tell Plur to get you a whore and some ale! It's a grand occasion dammit, noteworthy and things, a true milemarker in history, this will be the event against which all future events are compared and it will continue to outshine them all far into the future until the year 2037 when you hit level 23.

What are you talking about? You say this as if GS has ever been anything but that. =P That's what I love about it - loved about bf/mind wounds in SWG, too - gets people into town.
